How to take care of your ceramic coating

Why Maintenance Matters

A ceramic coating creates a durable protective layer over your vehicle's paint. This layer helps repel water, dirt, and contaminants, making your car easier to clean and maintain. However, over time, road grime, minerals, and tree sap can build up on the surface, reducing the coating's hydrophobic properties and gloss. Furthermore, these buildups will etch into your ceramic coating, and eventually your clear coat.

Regular washes will prevent build ups on your ceramic coating, therefore extending its longevity.

Wait Before Washing After Installation

Avoid washing the vehicle with any detergent for at least 2 weeks unless advises otherwise. This allows the coating to fully cure and bond to the paint surface.

During the curing period:

  • Keep the vehicle dry whenever possible (rain is generally fine but keep it undercover if possible)

  • Avoid washes of any kind.

  • Remove bird droppings or bug splatter carefully using a damp microfiber towel as soon as practically possible.

Wash Your Vehicle Regularly

We recommend washing at least every 2 - 6 weeks depending on driving and storage conditions.

Benefits of regular washing include:

  • Preventing contamination buildup

  • Maintaining water-beading performance

  • Preserving gloss and shine

  • The chance to apply ceramic maintenance products like Gyeon WetCoat

How to wash your car safely (A DIY er’s guide)

Incorrect washing methods do more harm than gain.

We always recommend using a reputable detailer who is familiar with ceramic coatings to perform all washes. However, if the owner decides to wash and maintain the car themself, it’s essential to use safe washing methods. This includes

  • Never using automatic washes, especially the ones with brush

  • Avoid inferior car wash businesses or ‘detailers’

  • Using safe wash methods such as the two bucket method or the multiple washmit method

  • Using safe microfibre tools instead of sponges and chamois

  • Avoid harsh chemicals with a PH level that is either too high or too low

Periodic maintenance

Although not essential, a ceramic maintenance spray such as Gyeon WetCoat can be used every a few washes. This can help refresh the coating's hydrophobic properties and gloss.

The application of Gyeon WetCoat is included when you book a wash with us.

A stronger ceramic topper such as Gyeon CanCoat can be applied every 1 to 3 years to further extend the life and performance of your coating. Although not essential, it is strongly recommended for owners who maintain their own vehicle.

Alternatively, you can book in with us to have a full decontamination wash with the application of Gyeon CanCoat Pro (an even stronger topper which is only available to certified detailers)

Remove bird droppings quickly

Bird droppings can still damage your vehicle if left unattended. Although ceramic coatings provide a protective barrier, these contaminants should be removed as soon as possible.

Keep a quick detailer spray and microfiber towel in your vehicle for emergencies. Or, as a minimum, use folded tissues that are plush and damp to gently remove bird droppings.
